Governor Doyle Signs Bills Honoring Wisconsin Service Members and Veterans

Governor Jim Doyle today signed nine bills honoring Wisconsin service members and veterans in Wisconsin. The Governor was joined at the bill signing by Brigadier General Donald Dunbar, military officials, veterans and representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs board.

"Today, the bills I will sign will honor the noble service all of Wisconsin's service men and women and veterans, and remember the sons and daughters of Wisconsin who courageously paid the price of liberty with their lives," Governor Doyle said. "Serving in our military is one of the greatest sacrifices our citizens can make. We are indebted to them and their families for all that they have done for the greater good of our country."

Governor Doyle signed the following bills into law:

Assembly Bill 32 prohibits employment discrimination based on military service obligations. Governor Doyle thanked Representative Owens and Senator Lassa for their work on the bill.

Assembly Bill 80 permits people who have had an immediate family member die while in military service to obtain "gold star" special license plates and lapel buttons. Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Gottlieb and Berceau and Senators Breske and Scott Fitzgerald for their work on the bill.

Assembly Bill 246 permits the use of a valid military identification card for the purchase of alcohol beverages. Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Sheridan and Musser and Senators Breske and Darling for their work on the bill.

Assembly Bill 351 designates and marks a bridge in Columbia County across the Wisconsin River between the towns of Dekorra and Caledonia as the "Veterans of the American Revolution Memorial Bridge." Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Hines and Berceau and Senators Miller and Olsen for their work on the bill.

Assembly Bill 370 requires the state to treat a military commercial driver license holder's application the same as an application of a commercial driver license holder from another jurisdiction. Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Turner and Albers and Senators Erpenbach and Scott Fitzgerald for their work on the bill.

Assembly Bill 450 requires U. S. flags flown over at public buildings, structures and facilities to have been manufactured in the U. S. Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Molepske and Honadel and Senator Plale for their work on the bill.

Senate Bill 49 gives free access to state parks and state trails to certain disabled veterans and former prisoners of war. Governor Doyle thanked Senators Lehman and Kedzie and Representatives Musser and Gronemus for their work on the bill.

Senate Bill 234 designates and marks State Highway 57 as the "57th Field Artillery Brigade Memorial Highway" to honor the members of the 57th Field Artillery Brigade of the Wisconsin National Guard, also known as the "Iron Brigade." Governor Doyle thanked Senators Leibham and Roessler and Representatives Ziegelbauer and Kestell for their work on the bill.

Senate Bill 413 requires the Department of Transportation to maintain military memorial signs for highways in an amount not to exceed a total of $2,000 per year on a statewide basis. Governor Doyle thanked Senators Scott Fitzgerald and Hansen and Representatives Murtha and Sheridan for their work on the bill.
